Humanitarian assistance is one of the major intervention areas of 4-H Nepal. It has been executing different programs of humanitarian assistance during national calamities and disasters in Nepal.
Serve the Nation
During the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, which struck with a magnitude of 7.8, the 4-H national team and its volunteers in coordination with Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force (APF), rescued children and elderly citizens in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur within 24 hours.
The organization also carried out a one-day rescue operation at Binayak Hospital, Balaju. The rescue campaign was led by President Lok Raj Awasthi, Treasurer Asmita Khadka, and Secretary Arjun Dahal at the central level, along with 20 youth volunteers. In the aftermath, 4-H Nepal mobilized 567 volunteers to build temporary shelters, schools, and heritage sites. 4-H Nepal focused on the most affected areas like Balaju, Hanuman Dhoka Darbar Square, and Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley, Dolkha, Kavre, and Rasuwa districts. The organization distributed relief materials, food items, and drinking water to the earthquake survivors in different temporary shelters in these districts.
Construction of school and buildings
4-H Nepal mobilized 567 volunteers to build temporary shelters, schools, and heritage sites. Over fifty-six days, the volunteers focused on rebuilding schools, private houses, toilets, and community spaces. Eighty volunteers built eight classrooms at Durbar High School in Kathmandu. Fourteen damaged houses in Sitapaila, Kathmandu, were constructed and handed over to the owners. In addition, 4-H volunteers, along with the APF, cleared debris at Changunarayan Temple for four days.
Sanitation Camp and Hygiene Program
4-H Nepal volunteers participated in the hygiene and sanitation program across various camps to protect the earthquake survivors from post-quake diseases. The volunteers worked in camps based in Tudhikhel, Singh Durbar, Balaju, Narayanhiti and Bagmati Riverside assisting disabled, poor, and vulnerable earthquake survivors.
Bridging government and stakeholders
4-H Nepal played a crucial role in coordinating with government agencies, security agencies, the private sector, NGOs, INGOs, and donor agencies to provide relief and support to the earthquake survivors. 4-H Nepal coordinated efforts in districts including Rasuwa, Dolakha, Sindhuli, Sidhupalchock, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur.
